PHOENIX (AP) -
Arizona is getting a $7.5 million federal grant to tackle substance abuse problems in five counties across the northern half of the state.
The state Department of Health Services says the money is intended to help reduce the number of deaths related to substance abuse as well as the prevalence of substance abuse. The five counties are Apache, Coconino, Mohave, Navajo and Yavapai.
Deputy Director Laura Nelson says personnel in several community health centers and one hospital emergency department will receive training.
They will be trained on how to identify patients who are either at risk or who have underlying substance abuse problems that might go untreated. Training on intervention also is planned.
The funding is come from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
