APS returns power to Parker area

PARKER, AZ (CBS5) -

Power to more than 6,000 customers was restored Wednesday morning.

Arizona Public Service said all customers affected by Tuesday's summer storm had power by about 5 a.m. Wednesday.

APS said there were power poles down in Parker, electrical equipment in Anthem and a substation struck by lightning in Lake Havasu.

The downed power lines caused communication challenges for police in Parker.

There were reports it rained hard for a good 30 minutes - long enough for the rain and strong winds to down 13 power lines. That didn't impact too many homes, but it did impact communication for the Colorado River Indian Tribes police; their radio network was down so they had to use their cell phones to call dispatch.

Crews diverted traffic off Highway 95 for a while, but did reopen the highway Tuesday evening.

People said that while today's winds were extraordinary, they're used to cleaning up after strong storms.

"If we get a heavy, heavy rain, we do lose power, the roads are closed because of the washes running dirt and boulders across the roadway, so when it does rain hard, this does occur," said Sgt. Gregg Sciotto with Colorado River Indian Tribes police.
