Petitions for Glendale sales-tax initiative nixed

GLENDALE, AZ (AP) -

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge has rejected petitions for a sales-tax initiative in Glendale.

Judge Robert Oberbillig ruled Monday that a description of a proposed initiative backed by a group of business leaders was misleading and that the Glendale City Clerk had the right to reject the petitions.

Earlier this month, Glendale rejected the anti-sales tax group Save Glendale Now's 4,138 petition signatures.

The city says the description was misleading, the petitions were untimely and the group didn't include a required serial number.

In light of the judge's ruling, Glendale's 0.7 percent sales-tax increase is scheduled to go into effect Wednesday.

It's expected to bring in about $20 million this year.

City officials who supported the increase say it was essential to avoid severe budget cuts.
