CHANDLER, AZ (CBS5) -

A Chandler woman was arrested Sunday on suspicion of choking her 11-year-old granddaughter, Chandler police said.

Susan Lee Benton, 57, was booked into jail on charges of aggravated assault and child abuse.

During a police interview, Benton denied choking the girl. She said she told the child to clean her room, and when the girl wouldn't obey, she used her hand to close her mouth, officers said.

The victim said she was dragged downstairs by her arm and ear, police said. The child said her grandmother threw her on the couch and began choking her.

The girl's sister heard screaming and came downstairs, police said. When she told the woman to stop, the grandmother refused, and the girl's sister ran next door and called police for help, officers said.
