MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Lightning struck a Mesa home causing a lot of damage Saturday night. The neighborhood came together trying to fix what they could while the homeowners are out of town.

In this day and age, it's not uncommon for neighbors to not really know one another.

But that isn't the case in a neighborhood near Thomas and Recker roads. These people are all friends who aren't afraid to get dirty, or even risk their safety, to help out one of their own.

"Absolutely everybody is really close in this neighborhood," said David Conway.

Just before 8 p.m., the house next door was struck by lightning. It shook the whole neighborhood.

"It was the loudest crack I ever heard, it was like a nuclear explosion," said Conway.

"It was a loud pop, a crack," said Judy Taylor.

Fire crews got to the scene very quickly and put out the fire in the attic. After they left, neighbors agreed to fix what they could inside.

"We told the fire department we'd help secure the property, cover the window that was broken. We found keys so we could secure and lock it for the owners," she said.

They say the homeowners are lucky they weren't home. They also realize it could have been their house that was struck, but they know if lightning did hit their house, the neighborhood would help out just the same.
