Scottsdale considering trail under power lines

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AP) -

A proposal to forge a formal hiking trail under high-tension power lines in Scottsdale is in its early stages.

The Arizona Republic reports that Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane confirmed Friday that the idea of creating a formal trail connection to the preserve under the power lines is under consideration. He said it could help turn the eyesore of overhead utility lines into an attraction.

The miles-long pathway under high-voltage lines could provide a new link for residents living in neighborhoods in eastern Scottsdale to access the city's McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

The desert preserve, one of the city's major attractions for locals and tourists alike, spans 33-square miles in Scottsdale, encompassing mountainous terrain east of Pima Road and west of the McDowell Mountain Regional Park.
