DOUGLAS, AZ (AP) -
A Mexican man has been arrested in southern Arizona for allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 635 pounds of marijuana through the Douglas Port of Entry.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers say 54-year-old Ricardo Osornio Gutierrez, of Hermosillo, was taken into custody Thursday.
They say Gutierrez's pickup truck was referred for an inspection when he attempted to cross the Arizona border.
A CBP narcotics canine alerted to the presence of drugs, leading to the discovery of 24 metal boxes containing the marijuana that had an estimated value of $318,000.
The drugs and vehicle were seized. Authorities say Gutierrez was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
