PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Mesa police arrested three juveniles on suspicion of burglary after a traffic stop and found what appeared to be an explosive device in their glove box on Thursday.
Police were responding to a call about two men shining a flashlight into a vehicle in the area of 836 N. Slater around 4 a.m. The caller told them they drove off in a copper colored car.
An officer spotted a vehicle that matched the description at Higley and Broadway and initiated a traffic stop.
Police said three boys inside the car admitted to stealing items from several vehicles. All three boys were booked on burglary charges.
During a search of the vehicle, officers found a CO2 cartridge with what looked like a fuse coming out of it.
The driver told officers that the device was filled with black powder. He said one of his friends makes the devices.
The Mesa HDT unit was called in to remove the device.
