A U.S. Marine Corps Harrier attack jet has crashed while on a training mission in southern Arizona and base officials say the pilot ejected safely.
A spokeswoman for the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma says the AV8B Harrier went down about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday some 15 miles northwest of the base.
She says the single-seat jet crashed in an unpopulated area but it was carrying ammunition and crews were dispatched to the scene in a recovery operation.
The pilot was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center and is expected to be OK. He reportedly called base officials with his cellphone after the crash to tell authorities his location.
The Yuma base is used by Marine aviators around the nation for training and is the world's busiest Marine Corps air station.
