MARICOPA COUNTY, AZ (CBS5) -
Eight undocumented immigrants, including a 3-year-old girl, were taken into custody by Maricopa County sheriff's deputies on Tuesday.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said human smuggling detectives were investigating a load vehicle coming from Mexico with plans to head to Chicago, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Arpaio said the group admitted to paying between $1,800 and $5,000 to be smuggled into the U.S., crossing the border near Altar, Agua Prieta, Mexicali, Sonorita and Nogales.
The child and her 23-year-old mother were turned over to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The remaining six people were arrested and booked, according to Arpaio.
Arpaio said over the past five months, 13 children, ages 3 to 17, have been taken into custody by Maricopa County sheriff's deputies and turned over to ICE.
