Tucson man sentenced in shooting death of teenager

Posted: Updated:

A Tucson man has been sentenced to two seven-year prison terms in connection with a home invasion that turned deadly.

Pima County prosecutors say 30-year-old Juan Carlos Leon was sentenced on counts of manslaughter and burglary and the two terms will be served concurrently. He pleaded guilty last August in the case and had faced up to a 42-year prison sentence.

Leon was accused of being the getaway driver for a group of men who broke into a home hoping to steal drugs in August 2009.

As the group was leaving, authorities say 15-year-old Brenda Arenas, her mother and little sister drove up and one of Leon's co-defendants fatally shot her.

The Arizona Daily Star says Leon originally was facing a first-degree murder charge under Arizona's felony murder rule.
