PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Members of Citizens for a Better Arizona called on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday to end all public funding of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's birther investigation.

The group also wants supervisors to place on the agenda for Aug. 8 a new policy that bans all private donations from individuals, groups, businesses or organizations to fund criminal investigations, citing the MCSO's Cold Case Posse probe of President Barack Obama's birth certificate.

"Given that Sheriff Arpaio violated county policy by spending our taxpayer dollars on sending a deputy to Hawaii without the approval of the county manager, (we) demand that Sheriff Arpaio reimburse the county out of his own pocket for these illegal expenditures," the group said.

"This is about accountability and transparency," said CBA Chairman Chad Snow. "We will not sit silently while Sheriff Arpaio continues to abuse his authority and waste our tax dollars."

The group said it expects supervisors to "supervise" the sheriff's office and "to make sure wasteful, unnecessary and illegal spending of our tax dollars does not occur."
