PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A recent round of unannounced inspections by the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures found a variety of violations in yogurt stores around the state that led to high prices for customers.

Violations ranged from non-licensed and inaccurate scales to businesses using scales that were not trade legal. Violations also included overpricing for not only the yogurt, but containers as well.

State law requires that packaging materials be deducted from the price, but at four locations the businesses were not deducting the container weight and ended up charging customers by the ounce for both.

A total of 44 businesses were inspected between May and June of 2012. A total of 47 scales were tested and 9 separate stores were cited for using unlicensed scales.

Investigators also audited proper pricing required by state law and found an overall compliance rate for pricing of 93.3 percent statewide.

Investigators said it was clear that more needs to be done and follow-up inspections will be necessary to ensure compliance of packaging and pricing laws.
