Ethnic studies texts won't be in Tucson classrooms

TUCSON, AZ (AP) -

Seven books removed from Tucson classrooms after the elimination of an ethnic studies program won't be returned.

A resolution to bring the books back into the classroom failed to garner a motion for a vote Tuesday before the Tucson Unified School District Governing Board.

The book removal had caused an uproar among supporters of Mexican American Studies, who claimed that the school district banned the texts, the Arizona Daily Star reported.

The district denied that, saying the books still were available in campus libraries.

Governing Board member Mark Stegeman, who brought the resolution, said keeping the books out of the classroom is unnecessary.

The board had voted in April to dismantle its ethnic studies program, which was found to be in violation of state law.
