A Mesa pilot and his son died Saturday when their plane crashed about half a mile away from an airfield in southern Colorado.
Jeff Morhet, 43, and his son Jackson, 9, were stopping at the airfield to refuel the two-seat Nanchang CT-68, according to the Huefano County Sheriff's Office.
Something went wrong when Morhet made his approach to land and they crashed about half a mile from the runway at Spanish Peaks Airfield on the north side of Walsenburg, CO, a spokesman said.
The Morhets were traveling to an air show in Wisconsin with three other planes, authorities said.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
