Anti-government leader found guilty in Vegas case

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS (AP) -

A federal judge in Las Vegas found a self-proclaimed rabbi, lawyer and leader of a "sovereign citizens" anti-government movement guilty in a $1.3 million money-laundering scheme.

Shawn Rice waived his right to a jury and represented himself during the 1 1/2-day trial before U.S. District Judge James Mahan.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Rice showed no emotion as he was found guilty Tuesday of 14 felony conspiracy and money laundering charges.

Mahan also found Rice guilty of charges stemming from being a fugitive for nearly two years. He was arrested at his home in Seligman, Ariz., in December after a 10-hour armed standoff with FBI agents.

Rice argued he was entrapped and that Mahan had no authority to take action against him.

He remains in federal custody pending sentencing.
