Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords traveled into the French Alps on Monday, according to a tweet posted by talkingpointsmemo.com.
Giffords was accompanied by her husband, NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, and mountain guide Vincent Lameyre, according to the tweet.
Kelly and two other astronauts walked from L'Aiguille du Midi to the Refuge des Cosmiques near Mont-Blanc in Chamonix to a mountain research station to to unveil a milestone plate for the 100th anniversary of the discovery of cosmic rays.
The event also marked the 14th month anniversary of the installation of the cosmic ray detector on the International Space Station by the astronauts during the last mission of the space shuttle Endeavour.
Giffords was wounded by a gunman in a January 2011 shooting that killed six people and injured 13 at the congresswoman's meet-and-greet event outside a Tucson grocery store.
