Tucson police spent nearly $4,700 investigating a series of prank calls by a 9-year-old girl and her 11-year-old sister.
The two girls were arrested after Tucson police said they called 911 multiple times claiming to be Isabel Celis, the 6-year-old Tucson girl who has been missing since April 21.
Police said the girls made three calls where they gave the name "Isabel" and claimed to have been kidnapped. In one of the calls they told police a man was coming for them.
The cell phone was quickly traced to the 7200 block of East Pierce Place.
More than 25 officers responded, and their investigation led them to an apartment complex at 1345 S. Kolb Rd., according to Tucson police Sgt. Chris Widmer.
Police said they made contact with the girls, who admitted to making the phone call as a prank. The girls' mother was home, but was unaware they had made the call.
Both girls were arrested and charged with one count of false reporting to a law enforcement agency. They were booked into the Pima County Juvenile Corrections Center. But officials said they did not meet the court's criteria for detention.
Prosecutors are expected to decide this week whether to file charges.
Police are still looking for Celis, who was reported missing from her parents home in April 2012.
