Flagstaff City Council rejects lighted snow park

Posted: Updated:
FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AP) -

The Flagstaff City Council has shot down a plan for a lighted snow sledding park.

T.J. Dana and his business partner, John Crowley, want to build the snow park on a 43-acre site above a local high school. The snow would be artificially made from the city's reclaimed wastewater.

The Arizona Daily Sun reported that the partners will re-evaluate their plan after the City Council voted earlier this week not to allow lighting. The council hasn't voted on a lease.

Opponents said the lights would threaten Flagstaff's dark skies, which are vital to the city's astronomy industry.

But supporters said the lights could fit within the city's allowable limits.

Officials with Lowell Observatory and the U.S. Naval Observatory didn't take sides.
