MESA, AZ (CBS5) -
A Forest Service volunteer who disappeared for several hours Wednesday in the Superstition Wilderness Area was found safe, Tonto National Forest officials said.
The volunteer's personal locator beacon enabled rescuers to locate the man, said Mesa District Ranger Gary Hanna.
At least 11 district employees, backed up by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office helicopter and crew, focused their search efforts in the area of the First Water Trailhead.
The trailhead is just off the Apache Trail and serves as a popular gateway into the Superstition Wilderness Area.
The 72-year-old man was named Volunteer of the Year in 2010.
