MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A 41-year-old man is in jail on various charges after Mesa police said he hit his girlfriend with a mountain bike and then tried to elude capture.

Brian Kirby is suspected of hitting his girlfriend with the bike about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday at 322 N. Gaylord in Mesa.

Officers found a man matching Kirby's description riding a mountain bike at Lindsay Road and University Drive in Mesa. The suspect pedaled away and ditched the bike in front of a Safeway store, which he entered and tossed a handgun into a bailer in a stock room, according to Sgt. Tony Landato of the Mesa Police Department.

The suspect was stymied by a back door that had a delayed timer and tried to escape through the front of the store, where he was confronted by police, Landato said.

Landato said Kirby gave officers false information, including his brother's name and birth date.

He was booked into jail on charges of misconduct involving weapons, providing false information and trespassing.
