Road repairs in historic Arizona mining town ongoing

CROWN KING, AZ (AP) -

Crews remain busy removing boulders from the road into a historic mining town after a rockslide forced its closure over the weekend.

Yavapai County sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn says the repairs in Crown King are expected to last throughout the week.

The road is closed to the general public.

Mail is being delivered, and local residents can travel on the road with an escort.

The Daily Courier reports that several sections of the road remain blocked as crews used boulders that fell from the mountain as a base to rebuild it.

The hillside recently was burned bare by the Gladiator Fire.

Crews had done rapid mitigation on some of the most dangerous areas by reseeding the hillside and spreading chips and straw to try to control monsoon rains.
