PHOENIX (CBS5) -
The Tonto National Forest is reducing fire restrictions because of increased humidity, but fireworks and target shooting are still prohibited.
The lessened restrictions begin Wednesday allowing petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns and heating devices, officials said. Smoking is allowed in developed campgrounds, vehicles and buildings and campfires are prohibited except for some developed campgrounds, officials said.
The restrictions also apply to using internal combustion power tools, welding equipment, torches with open flames and using guns except when following Arizona hunting laws.
The areas closed by recent fires, Fossil Creek, Mt. Ord, Four Peaks and Three Bar Wildlife Area, will also be opened again.
Acting fire staff Helen Graham said the forest has received more moisture, but not enough to lift the restrictions completely.
Violations of the restrictions are punishable by up to six months in jail and up to $5,000 fine.
