Mesa wins grant to confront drugged drivers

Posted: Updated:
MESA, AZ (AP) -

The city prosecutor's office in Mesa won a nearly $17,000 grant that will be used to speed along lab work in drunken driving cases in which the drivers are accused of being under the influence of drugs.

The grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety will let the Mesa Police Department's crime lab stay open an additional 20 hours each month so technicians can focus solely on testing in such cases.

A portion of the money also will pay for new technology that will help prosecutors more effectively explain to jurors the effects of drugs on drivers.
