Yuma police officer cleared in fatal shooting case

YUMA, AZ (AP) -

A Yuma police sergeant has been cleared in the fatal shooting of a spear-wielding man last month.

City police say the Yuma County Attorney's Office declared the June 6 shooting "justified, reasonable and appropriate."

They say Sgt. Jeff Ruby returned to work Monday. The 18-year veteran had been on administrative leave since the incident.

Police say 35-year-old Michael Cooper was shot after he threw a five-foot spear and incited a three-hour standoff at a Yuma apartment complex.

Investigators say Ruby fired his rifle twice, but only one of the bullets struck Cooper.

Authorities say Cooper was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
