PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Phoenix police said an armed man who walked into a west Phoenix fast-food restaurant fired two shots and mysteriously died inside the restaurant Sunday night.
Witnesses said the man walked into a Jack in the Box near Glendale and Northern avenues around 10 p.m., yelling that people were chasing and trying to kill him, said Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department.
An employee tried to calm the man down, but then walked to the back of the restaurant to call police. The employee said the man then pulled a handgun and fired two shots in the store.
Two customers and four employees ran from the restaurant. Crump said a police dog separated the man from his gun and that he was taken from the restaurant before paramedics declared him dead at the scene.
Crump said there was no sign of trauma and no gunshot wounds. Crump said it appeared the man had taken cash from the register.
Witnesses said the man had mental problems and was a drug abuser and had reportedly been awake for the past 72 hours, according to Crump.
The restaurant was still closed early Monday morning.
