Hearing set on lawsuit over Ariz. abortion cutoff

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -

A federal judge has scheduled a July 25 hearing on an attempt to block enforcement of a new limit on when most abortions can be performed in Arizona.

A lawsuit filed by abortion-rights groups challenges a new state law's general ban on abortions starting at 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The ban would take effect Aug. 2 unless blocked.

Arizona now permits abortions until a fetus can survive outside the womb. That's generally considered to be 23 to 24 weeks.

The hearing will be held in U.S. District Court in Phoenix before Judge James Teilborg.
