PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Firefighters are trying to contain a four-fire complex near Black Canyon City and New River that has spread to about 4,750 acres.

About 130 people are trying to contain the Cook Complex and more are on the way, fire officials said.

The first fire was reported Wednesday afternoon 12 miles east of Black Canyon City. The 180-acre fire is burning in a rough and remote section of the Tonto National Forest, officials said.

The second, 500-acre fire began nine miles southeast of the city Wednesday shortly after the first, authorities said.

The next fire began minutes after the second one, authorities said. It has grown to 4,000 acres and is five miles southeast of Black Canyon City.

The latest fire began Thursday 12 miles northeast of the city and is currently 67 acres. Firefighters are trying to protect the lookout tower and communication site on top of a nearby mountain.

"Rain has fallen around us but not on these fires. The vegetation is extremely dry and lightning strikes are forecast to continue," said Andy Mandell, incident commander trainee.
