PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Afternoon thunderstorms surrounded three fires burning near Black Canyon City with moisture on Saturday, but very little rain fell directly on the fires, fire officials said.
Firefighters said the moisture and humidity would help as they continued attempts to contain the three wildfires on Sunday.
Reconnaissance flights over the fires Saturday revealed they were burning approximately 5,990 acres.
Firefighters said they would continue to use air resources to support ground crews Sunday.
The biggest fire is called the Squaw Creek Fire. It has already charred roughly 5,000 acres about 6 miles southeast of Black Canyon City, fire officials said. Two crews and one engine are battling the blaze, which is 50 percent contained. CBS 5 viewers said smoke was blowing into Anthem.
The Cooks Fire about 12 miles east of Black Canyon City in the Tonto National Forest has burned 190 acres and is 50 percent contained, firefighters said.
The New River Fire has burned about 800 acres and is 25 percent contained, fire bosses said.
