Phoenix police said a man shot and killed himself while two children were upstairs in their west Phoenix home Wednesday morning.
The man and a woman had been arguing when she ran down the block screaming for police, officers said. Police said she had injuries that indicated domestic violence.
They went to the house near 54th Avenue and Virginia where the man was believed to be inside.
No one answered police knocks at the door, but officers later heard a gunshot.
Fearing for the safety of the woman's children, ages 2 months and 4 years, police forced their way into the house and found the man shot to death in the dining room. The children were found unharmed on the second floor.
"The children did not appear to be harmed in any way," Phoenix Police Department spokesman James Holmes said. "The sergeant just told me that they appear to be fine. I don't know. I'm pretty sure at least the 4-year-old would have been upset by what he or she is hearing, but physically the kids are OK and that's what's important."
Police are not sure the relationship between the woman and the suspect. The woman is expected to be OK.
