PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A multiple-vehicle crash caused by an erratic driver left three people injured and led to the closure of Carefree Highway in both directions Tuesday morning, Scottsdale police said.
Police said the accident was reported as a hit-and-run shortly near the intersection with Scottsdale Road after 8 a.m. and that a suspect was injured in the crash.
Officer Dave Pubins of the police department said the driver of a White Chevrolet Blazer was westbound on Carefree Highway when he made a U-turn and accelerated in and out of traffic. An approaching Chrysler sedan swerved to miss the Blazer but struck a BMW SUV head-on.
The Blazer continued east and rear-ended a BMW roadster, Pubins said, and was going so fast the Blazer flipped, but landed on its wheels. Pubins said the Blazer's driver continued on before crashing into a front yard of a home.
Pubins said the residents came out and the suspect began fighting them before firefighters and police arrived.
Firefighters had to extricate some of the injured from their vehicles, police said. The injured were taken to a hospital, where all were expected to survive.
Carefree Highway was closed for several hours.
The suspect was described as in his 30s, and charges were pending toxicology tests and his release from the hospital, Pubins said.
