PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Fewer drunk drivers were on the roads in Arizona this Fourth of July holiday weekend. That's according to statistics released Monday by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
Over the long weekend in 2011, Arizona patrol units stopped 11,210 vehicles. In 2012, 11,624 stops were made.
During those stops last year, 523 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI). In comparison, this year, only 505 drivers were caught. Of those drivers, 161 were considered Extreme DUI, with a blood alcohol level above 0.15. In 2011, only 157 Extreme DUI arrests were made.
Also this year, the average blood alcohol content (BAC) for impaired drivers was 0.151. Last year that number was lower at 0.144.
Officers also arrested nine more minors in 2012, for being behind the wheel after drinking.
