PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Kiplinger magazine has ranked Phoenix No. 2 in its "10 cheapest cities you'll want to visit" survey.

The magazine is advising people looking to go on a great summer vacation without spending lots of money to consider Phoenix.

The list was compiled to assist frugal visitors who still wanted to find a place worth visiting, the magazine said. The rankings were based on attractions, airfares, hotel costs and dining costs.

The magazine said the average cost of airfare to Phoenix was $321, the average hotel room per night was $85 and the average meal cost was $35.

While the Phoenix area has long been a destination for sun-seekers and golf fanatics, the magazine said there is also plenty for younger crowds.

The city has four major sports teams, half a dozen big-name museums, fantastic dining, great golf courses and one of the world's most colorful and ecologically diverse deserts, according to the magazine.

With 310 sunny days a year, the magazine said there is little chance your money will be wasted on a rainy trip.

The magazine advised visitors to book vacations between September and May unless they are looking to bask in the heat because average temperatures from June to August are over 100 degrees.
