Navajo lawmakers to vote on water settlement

FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AP) -

Navajo lawmakers will vote on a settlement that recognizes the tribe's rights to water from the Little Colorado River basin.

The Tribal Council is meeting in a special session in Window Rock on Thursday.

U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl has introduced legislation to approve the settlement, but it won't move forward without the blessing of the Navajo and Hopi tribes. Another 30 entities, including the state of Arizona, its major water providers, cities and ranchers, also would need to sign off on it.

Hopi lawmakers have approved the settlement but rejected Kyl's legislation.

Navajo lawmakers will consider separate measures on the settlement and legislation as well.

Under the settlement, the tribes would waive further claims to the river basin. It also funds groundwater delivery projects.
