PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Grand Canyon University and the Phoenix Police Department announced a $1 million partnership aimed at stopping crime in the area around the university's campus.

Phoenix City Councilman Daniel Valenzuela and the Phoenix Police Department announced the formation of the Neighborhood Safety Initiative Thursday.

Phoenix police and GCU have both pledged $100,000 per year for five years to create a stronger police presence from 43rd Avenue to 1-17 and from Bethany Home to Indian School roads.

The initiative is the first agreement of its kind between a public agency and a private company in Arizona aimed at suppressing crime in a particular neighborhood.
