GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -

Gilbert police have released the name of a man who died after he was struck by a train in Gilbert on Tuesday morning.

Officers said a Union Pacific Railroad train hit Patrick Zenner, 46, of Gilbert, before 8 a.m., severing both his legs.

Police said he was alive when they arrived and paramedics applied tourniquets to both his legs.

He was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare-Osborn, where he died, police said.

The engineer told police the train crew observed something along the railroad tracks in the distance, said Gilbert Police Spokesman Sgt. Bill Balafas. The engineer blew the horn to warn of the approaching train, Balafas said. The horn caused a reaction from the victim, who reportedly moved but whose legs were across the railroad tracks, Balafas said.

Alcohol may have been a factor in the death, according to Balafas. Investigators are waiting for toxicology reports from the medical examiner's office.

The incident caused the closure of Gilbert Road between Elliot and Guadalupe roads.
