PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Paradise Valley couple both died of gunshot wounds to the head, the final autopsy report on the prominent philanthropists said.

The medical examiner ruled the cause of death of Lawrence Shapiro, 79, was "inhalation of products of combustion with other significant conditions of (a) gunshot wound of the head and arteriosclerosis."

His wife, 78-year-old Glenna, died of two gunshots wounds of the head, the medical examiner said.

He ruled the manner of death for each of them was homicide.

Police found the couple's bodies bound together at the ankles in the master bedroom of their burning home last winter. One of Lawrence Shapiro's wrists and both of his wife's wrists had been bound with what appeared to be "black coaxial cable and an electric heating pad with off-white cord," the medical examiner said.

Paradise Valley officers went to the home Jan. 30 after Phoenix police found a car on fire behind a strip mall about 20 miles away. The car was registered to the home's owners, who lived a little more than 15 miles away.

When an officer arrived at the house, she saw smoke coming from inside. Firefighters put out fires that had been set in two bedrooms, including the master bedroom, where the Shapiros' bodies were located.

Michael Crane, 31, is accused of killing the couple. He is facing 15 felony charges including first-degree murder and arson.

Crane announced Wednesday that he may represent himself in court.

Police also said that a week before the death of the Shapiros, Crane robbed and killed Bruce Gaudet of Phoenix.
