The Poco Fire northeast of Young is 85 percent contained, the incident management team said Thursday.
The human-caused wildfire, which began June 14, has burned about 11,950 acres. Five firefighters were injured. The damage estimate is at $9 million. No structures were burned.
On Friday, the Central West Zone Interagency Type 3 Incident Management Team turns fire management back to the Tonto National Forest.
The type 3 team maintained 90 fire personnel at the scene on Thursday, mostly assigned to patrolling the fire's perimeter and chopping downed trees to remove fuel from the fire zone.
Forest Road 512 to Young remains closed as crews patrol the fire's perimeter, but the road will open again Wednesday morning if fire does not spread. Local residents and visitors are advised to keep out of the fire zone and to not ride ATVs, UTVs or quads anywhere near or in the fire zone. Officials said hazards, such as falling trees, rolling rocks and burning stumps, still exist.
At the height of the wildfire, 768 personnel were stationed in Young. They came from California, Idaho, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Wyoming and Wisconsin to protect the central Arizona communities.
