Special delivery: Mesa baby born in car on way to hospital

Posted: Updated:

Taylor and Michael Hale of Mesa got an unexpected early surprise on their way to a Gilbert hospital.

Mesa police received a 911 call from the couple at 4:08 Tuesday morning saying that baby Chloe wasn't waiting and they needed to pull over.

Michael Hale stayed on the phone with 911 as the dispatcher guided him through the delivery, an officer said.

"I was really panicked, like you think, oh my gosh, I'm gonna actually have a baby in the car. That's really scary.  But then once I knew her head was coming, and everything else was coming, your natural instincts kind of take over," said Taylor Hale.

The mother gave birth to a baby girl about a mile from Banner Gateway Hospital.  Paramedics took mom and baby the rest of the way to have them both checked out, according to officers.

Proud dad Michael Hale said his wife never intended to have a natural child birth - and after this experience, she doesn't ever want to again.
