MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Bradley Mitchell is only 10 years old, yet his actions after his mother was badly injured in a car crash reflect a maturity many adults might not exhibit.

Bradley was honored by firefighters from Mesa and Payson on Thursday for saving his mother's life after the family SUV rolled off the roadway near Pine in December.

The vehicle carried Bradley, his brother and sister, and was driven by his mother, Amanda Mitchell.

After their SUV hit an embankment and rolled down a mountainside, Bradley took charge, first freeing his younger brother and sister and then finding the wherewithal to perform CPR on his critically injured mother, an act that saved her life, firefighters said.

Bradley then scrambled up the mountain to flag a passing motorist for help.

"You did a remarkable thing for anybody," said Payson Fire Chief Marty Demasi. "But for a 10-year-old man like yourself, that is really noteworthy. I want to thank you personally. I appreciate it. You're a hero, buddy."

Amanda Mitchell couldn't hold back her tears as her son was honored during a ceremony in Mesa on Thursday, but did say she was very proud of and loves her son.

Bradley was awarded a certificate and his own firefighter's helmet with his name on the back.
