AZ ranks last in child hunger

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

One in three children is going to bed hungry tonight, according to a new report by the group Feeding America.

It said Arizona ranks dead last when it comes to child hunger in our country.

Diana Esparza is a mother to one big Valley family.

"Five kids, it's pretty hard seeking help and I'm glad that this place exists," Esparza said.

She is able to get food at the Desert Mission Food Bank.

"Stretching a lot, you know, just making sure, it actually goes for everybody," Esparza said.

She's not the only one trying to keep her kids fed. About 200 families show up every day.

"Since 2008, here at our food bank, we have seen over a 55 percent increase in demand," Cindy Hallman of Desert Mission said.

During the summer months, she said families have higher electric bills because of the air conditioning and spend more on child care, which means less money for food.

"Where we are in our economy plays a big role in why families are struggling so much," Hallman said.

Esparza said she's glad to know her kids will be fed tonight.

"I'm just thankful for this place, they're good people, you know, trying to help out kids, making sure they are fed and I wish there were more places like this," Esparza said.
