PINAL COUNTY, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu is taking heat for insisting five bodies found in a burned SUV in the desert this weekend were the work of a Mexican drug cartel.

There were about a dozen protesters outside his headquarters Wednesday morning. They were given a spot in the parking lot to safely protest, but they took their message into the roadway.

"This is about all of Arizona, this is not just about immigrants, although immigrants are mostly affected by Paul Babeu's behavior, but this is about all of Arizona because if Sheriff Babeu gets re-elected to Pinal County, all of the counties and all of Arizona will be affected," Carlos Galindo, with the Immigrant Advocacy Foundation, told CBS 5 during the protest.

Babeu told The Associated Press on Wednesday that those criticizing his actions are on their "high horse," when all he was trying to do was be transparent.

Babeu had pointed to violent cartels as the likely culprit after the bodies were found burned beyond recognition inside an SUV in his county.

On Tuesday, Tempe police said the vehicle, belonging to a missing family of five whose disappearance was being investigated as a murder-suicide, was the same vehicle that the bodies were in.
