A Valley woman said her dog was put down instead of fixed, and she blames Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.
It's a case of he-said, she-said. The dog's owner, Tiffany Macbay, said she was supposed to pick up her dog, Maverick, at 2:30 Monday after he was sterilized. But Animal Care and Control says she was supposed to pick him up there Saturday. She never did, so they put Maverick down.
"He was just, you know, part of our family," Macbay said, after a tragic miscommunication between her and Animal Care and Control. It all started when Maverick allegedly bit a neighbor.
"He just tore through his jeans a little bit and his boxers, no puncture wound," Macbay said. Animal Control showed up and instead of citing Macbay, they took Maverick away for what was supposed to be 10 days because he wasn't up to date on his rabies vaccine.
"They said that they got to put a microchip in him and that they need to neuter him," Macbay said.
Even though her paperwork said she was to pick Maverick up Saturday, Macbay claims Animal Control said they'd keep Maverick an extra two days because they don't have a vet on the weekends to do the procedure. But when she called Monday, they told her Maverick hadn't been neutered. He had been euthanized.
"We were so excited to get him and they killed him," she said.
"We feel really bad for Maverick for what happened to him," said Audie Greybear with Animal Care and Control.
He said they told Macbay she had to pick Maverick up by Saturday or they would euthanize him. They have no record that Maverick was supposed to be neutered and the number they had on file for her was out of service. Greybear said ultimately the responsibility lies with Macbay.
"If the owner had its vaccinations current and had an updated license, the dog would not have come into the shelter," he said.
Macbay said she called Animal Control within those 10 days to make sure Maverick was OK, and the employees there told her they were all set for the neutering Monday and she could pay when she picked him up.
Animal Control said that is not something they would offer and that she was told to pay and pick him up Saturday. Macbay knows nothing will bring her dog back, but wishes it would have ended differently.
"I want answers," she said. "I want justice for my dog."
