Maricopa County's Board of Supervisors has decided to hire outside counsel to defend itself in the racial-profiling lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The lawsuit against Maricopa County also names Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

County spokeswoman Cari Gerchick said they hired Richard Walker, from Scottsdale-based Walker and Peskind, PLLC, and Dan Webb, Winston and Strawn, LLP, in Chicago, to represent them.

Gerchick said Wednesday's vote by the board was 3-2. Supervisors Don Stapley and Mary Rose Wilcox voted against the decision, saying they wanted to save taxpayer money and did not want to hire out of state.

The lawsuit, filed on May 10, alleges that Sheriff Joe Arpaio's deputies racially profile Latinos in the sheriff's trademark immigration patrols and that the sheriff's office retaliated against critics of the patrols.

The sheriff has long denied the racial profiling allegations.
