Water rate may not go up for some Phoenix residents

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

For the first time in 20 years, people living in Phoenix may not have to pay more for water next year.

The announcement came Tuesday from Mayor Greg Stanton.

Stanton told CBS 5 News the water rate is on the agenda for Wednesday's formal City Council meeting.

The mayor said the decision is not a political stunt but is instead based on the numbers.

"I think it's important for the public to understand that we're a well-run city, and since this is a well-run city, we're in a position to have zero water rate increase for next year," said Stanton.

Stanton also chimed in on Arizona's term-limit election bill recently signed into law.

It could give Stanton an extra year as mayor.

He said he completely disagrees with the law and is looking at what legal action the city can take.
