Continued dry conditions and an increase in wildfire activity throughout Arizona have led to fire restrictions continuing over the holiday weekend.
The biggest wildfire in the state is the Sunflower Fire in eastern Arizona. The fire south of Payson has burned more than 16,000 acres. The fire was started on May 12 and is 43 percent contained.
The Gladiator Fire broke out at a home last week in Crown King. It also has grown and blackened more than 16,000 acres. It is 30 percent contained. Firefighters have been challenged by strong winds, low humidity and high temperatures.
A wildfire burning in the Sierra Vista Ranger District of the Coronado National Forest is now 70 percent contained, forestry officials said. As of Thursday, the Collins Fire had burned 50 acres in the U.S. and approximately 11,853 acres in Mexico.
And, the Bull Flat Fire that began on May 10 northeast of Young is expected to be fully contained on Friday after devouring more than 2,100 acres.
A number of fire restrictions are in place across the state:
All State Trust Lands in Arizona.
All National Forests in Arizona: Apache-Sitgreaves, Coconino, Coronado, Kaibab, Prescott and Tonto.
National Parks in southern Arizona: Chiricahua National Monument, Coronado National Memorial and Ft. Bowie National Historic Site.
All Fish & Wildlife Service Lands/Refuges except Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge.
Most BLM public lands with the exception of Arizona Strip District lands north of the Colorado River.
Most BIA, Indian Trust and Tribal lands, with the exception of the Hopi Tribe and Tohono O'odham Nation.
More localized and specific contact and fire restriction information can be found by calling the fire restrictions hotline at 1-877-864-6985.
