TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

Tempe voters are going to the polls Tuesday in a general/special election.

In addition to the candidates for mayor and one council seat, voters will decide Proposition 439, a proposed amendment to the Tempe City Charter relating to elections.

If approved, Proposition 439 would amend Article VII, Section 7.01, of the Tempe City Charter, to allow the city to dispense with a primary election if no more than two candidates file nominating petitions for each vacancy in office. If the primary election is dispensed with, it would allow the general election, typically held in May, to be held when the primary election would otherwise have been held in March.

Polling places are open until 7 p.m. Voters should remember to bring photo identification to the polls. Voters can confirm their designated polling places by visiting the Maricopa County Elections Department website or by checking the mailing label side of the publicity pamphlet mailed to all registered voters. It includes the name and address of your polling place in red lettering.

Voters who have an early ballot need to know it must be returned to the Maricopa County Elections Department by 7 p.m. Tuesday, or it can be dropped off at any polling site on Tuesday.
