PHOENIX (CBS5) -

First-graders from Hearn Academy made a special gift for a girl diagnosed with cancer.

The project was spearheaded by an art teacher at the school.  Her first-grade daughter, who attends Cochise Elementary, had a classmate diagnosed with cancer. She then chose a first-grade class at the school where she is an art teacher to design a quilt for the girl.

It took months for the students to complete the quilt.  The art teacher said she wanted her students to be able to do a service project that would instill a sense of social responsibility.

"I wanted them to be able to express themselves and realize that art is the perfect way to convey caring and compassion," explained teacher Kerri McDermott.  "I wanted them to understand that the true joy in life is in giving and helping others in need."

The quilt was presented to Emma and her mother at a Mother's Day Tea on Friday.

The students left a blank square for Emma Lee so she can make her own design.
