PHOENIX (CBS5) -
The U.S. Postal Service, National Association of Letter Carriers, and the Phoenix postmaster have teamed up with valley food banks to help stamp out hunger.
It's part of their 20th annual "Stamp Out Hunger Across America" event.
Citizens can do their part by leaving a grocery bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal, next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery.
The food is being collected on Saturday.
Local letter carriers will collect these food donations as they deliver the mail and take them to local food banks.
This now national drive began in Phoenix more than 30 years ago.
In 2011, food drive organizers across the country collected more than 70 million pounds in donations.
More than 1.8 million pounds of food were collected by Arizona letter carriers last year.
