MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A man who allegedly threatened another man with a gun has been shot and killed by Mesa police officers.

Det. Diana Williams with the Mesa Police Department said the 22-year-old suspect was shot at the Sunland Motel, located at 2602 East Main St., at approximately 11 a.m. He died from his injuries Wednesday afternoon.

A heated exchange between the two men occurred on Main Street and one of the men threatened the other with a gun, officers said. The man ran away and called police.

Two officers found the suspect with the gun and attempted to use a Taser to subdue him. Only one of the prongs hit him, police said.

When the man reportedly reached for something in his waistband, both officers opened fire. The suspect was hit once.

It's not known whether the two men knew each other and it's unclear if either of them was staying at the motel.

Williams said no officers were hurt.
